JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) A wealthy GOP political donor is willing to bankroll a possible ballot initiative to repeal a Missouri ban on abortions after eight weeks of pregnancy.
Missouri businessman David Humphreys had made a public pitch for Gov. Mike Parson to veto the bill. But the Republican governor signed it into law Friday anyway.
Greg Blair, a consultant who released Humphreys’ statement, confirmed to The Associated Press on Friday that he would be open to funding a potential effort to repeal the legislation.
Humphreys in a Thursday statement had called the measure “bad public policy and bad for Missourians.” He cited the lack of exceptions for pregnancies caused by rape or incest.
The eight-week ban is set to take effect Aug. 28 unless it’s blocked in court.
