Legacy RecordingsThe massive new archival Bob Dylan box set, The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1975 Live Recordings — the audio companion to the forthcoming Martin Scorsese-directed film focusing on the first leg of Dylan’s 1975-1976 trek — was released today.
As previously reported, the collection features 148 tracks spread over 14 CDs, including five full concerts that were professionally recorded during the ’75 Rolling Thunder Revue tour. The package also features recently rediscovered recordings from tour rehearsals in New York City.
More than 100 of the tracks featured on The Rolling Thunder Revue collection are previously unreleased. The full shows took place in November and December ’75 at venues in Worcester, Cambridge and Boston, Massachusetts; and in Quebec City, Canada.
The box set also includes a CD featuring newly unearthed rehearsal recordings from a motel in Falmouth, Massachusetts, and another CD of rare performances from various venues and stops along the tour route.
In addition, the box set also includes a 52-page booklet offering rare photos from the trek and a new essay.
The Rolling Thunder Revue tour featured Dylan delivering a series of long and loose performances with a cast of musicians that included Joan Baez, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Byrds frontman Roger McGuinn and ex-David Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson. Joni Mitchell and poet Allen Ginsberg also made special appearances at some shows.
The Scorsese-directed film, titled Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story, premieres on Netflix on Wednesday, June 12, on Netflix, and also will be screened at select theaters around the U.S. starting June 11.
To coincide with The Rolling Thunder Revue box set’s release, a video from the film, featuring Dylan performing a rollicking version of “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” at a December 1975 concert, has been posted on Netflix’s YouTube channel.
