PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AP) A city in Arkansas is making an effort to address a teacher shortage in some school districts.
Ryan Whatley, the director of the organization Go Forward Pine Bluff, tells the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette teachers can obtain their master’s degree in teaching free of charge by meeting certain requirements.
Whatley says area businesses in Pine Bluff have pledged $690,000 to fund the program.
The fellowship allows certified teachers with bachelor’s degrees to qualify for 100 percent paid tuition in any of the University of Arkansas campuses in Little Rock, Pine Bluff or Monticello.
The catch? Teachers must live and teach in Pine Bluff for at least three years after they earn their degree. They must also obtain their masters within four years.
Applications are available on the organization’s website.
