One of the goals of the Friends of the Norfork National Fish Hatchery is to get local youth and their parents off the couches, away from video games and other technology and into the outdoors and nature. The local organization will host the Hatchery Outdoor Adventure Sept. 7 from 9 until 2.

The outdoor adventure includes several different activities and approximately 15 different vendors each year. Friends Director Jay Chafin says the vendors include the Baxter County Master Gardeners, the James A. Gaston Visitor Center at Bull Shoals-White River State Park, the White River Artists, the Home Depot, a local kayaking group and more.

The fly fishing activity is for children ages 16 and under. Other activities include Japanese fish painting, yard fishing, bear knowledge, archery, crafts, a spin casting accuracy game, a fire truck adventure, kayaking, a BB gun shooting range and more.

Chafin says as the Friends of the Hatchery look to develop an appreciation for the outdoors among the local community, it’s difficult to imagine a better place to achieve that goal than the Twin Lakes Area.

The outdoor adventure is free of charge, and no registration is required. Chafin says participants might want to bring money for food.
