
One of America’s premier mysteries, “Legends of the White River Monster”, by Dianna Roller will be the topic of the Baxter County Historical and Genealogical Society meeting Tuesday evening, starting at 6 in the Knox Room of the Donald W. Reynolds Library Serving Baxter County.
Along the banks of the White River near Newport in Jackson County, several alleged sightings of a large creature treading water have been reported since 1915. It became a legend, with locals referring to the reported “monster” as “Whitey.”
Roller is a native to Northeast Arkansas and has lived in the Mountain Home area since 1976. She is a retired teacher and has always had an interest in history. Roller has conducted numerous educational programs, including a lunch and learn program at ASU on the history of Baxter County and a program about ghost towns for the Baxter County and Marion County historical societies and the Mountain Home Christian Academy.
The Baxter County Historical Society meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6. Most meetings are held at the Donald W. Reynolds Library. Meetings are free and open to the public.
