As the August recess gets closer to winding down in our nation’s captial, one member of Arkansas’s congressional delegation has been meeting with constituents throughout his district. First District Representative Rick Crawford was in Mountain Home on Friday and stopped by KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot to discuss citizens’ concerns and an issue he has been addressing as a member of the House Agriculture Committee.

Two weeks ago, Crawford met with the Agriculture Council of Arkansas in Jonesboro and discussed trade wars with other countries including China. During that meeting, he labeled China as “dishonest brokers.” Crawford says the Asian country is not following the rules other countries in the World Trade Organization are abiding by, but the WTO is not holding them accountable.

Crawford goes on to say China is $100 billion out of compliance on agriculture subsidies, and as a result, the United States and other countries are having to cover the costs. The Republican representative says President Donald Trump is laying down a marker on the Chinese that is 25 years overdue.

Crawford says China’s goal is not to compete but to dominate the global marketplace, and they use foreign direct investment as a primary driver of their economy.
