The boundaries of the City of Mountain Home grew Thursday evening with the city council’s passage of an annexation ordinance. City officials, including Mayor Hillrey Adams, say the action was taken to meet the needs of existing businesses east of town, while generating additional sales tax dollars and hopefully bringing further commercial development.

The council with member Eva Frame absent gave its full approval to the annexation plan that will make sewer service available to a number of businesses along U.S. Highway 62B and a limited number of residences.

Mayor Adams says the sale of property at the intersection of U.S. Highway 62B and County Road 28 to a developer who has yet to file for a business permit also played a role in the plan.

Mayor Adams says while he cannot provided further details about the prospective development, he says the steps taken by the council were necessary in order for the project to move forward. He says the wheels are now moving to bring “something” to the property along County Road 28 by bringing sewer service from the line that now extends to Walmart.

Adams says city officials hope the annexation and subsequent sewer line extension will bring growth.

The sewer project has an engineers’ cost estimate of just under $300,000. But Adams says the unnamed developer has provided a substantial contribution toward the needed supplies, along with other existing businesses in the area. He says the materials represent roughly one-half of the cost of the project.

In the meantime, with a number of businesses being annexed into the city limits, Mayor Adams points to an immediate benefit.

Adams says a second phase of sewer line extension is anticipated east of town in the commercially zoned area.
