A Stone County man made a major mistake when he discussed putting up a reportedly stolen chainsaw and a number of hand tools as collateral for his bail bond during a telephone call.Twenty-five-year-old Carl Jacob Jones, who lists a Mountain View address, has been in trouble in both Baxter and Stone counties. He made an appearance in Baxter County Circuit Court Thursday on thefts charges.
He is accused in Baxter County of stealing a pickup truck from a Big Flat repair shop. The theft was reported in January.
Jones was an inmate in the Stone County Detention Center on Feb. 10 when he made the ill-advised telephone call about arranging his bail bond. The call was monitored by a Stone County criminal investigator. The investigator was aware a chainsaw and a number of hand tools had been in the pickup truck stolen from the Big Flat garage.
According to a Baxter County Sheriff’s Office incident report, the building housing the Big Flat business had also been entered and various items taken, including an air compressor.
Stone County investigators located the stolen truck at a home in Mountain View. Residents of the home, including Jones and several members of his family, were interviewed.
Baxter County Sheriff’s Office investigators became involved in the case because the truck theft had taken place in Big Flat.
The record is silent on the exact date Jones was arrested in Stone County. In one interview with investigators, Jones is said to have admitted he knew about the stolen pickup, but denied taking it.
Investigators returned to Jones’ grandmother’s home along Herple Road in Mountain Home where Jones lived. The grandmother and Jones’ mother and sister were at the house and allowed officers to look around the property, including going through Jones’ bedroom
The grandmother told deputies she had found several tools in a plastic shopping bag on the floor of her carport. She said she had put the bag in the trunk of her car. When she opened the trunk, investigators were able to match brand names on the tools — including wrenches and socket sets — all of which had been described by the victim of the truck theft in Big Flat.
Jones was booked into the Baxter County Detention Center late last month.
During his court appearance Thursday, he was ordered to reappear in circuit court Dec. 5, which is the last date he can accept or reject any plea offers made by the state.
Currently, Jones is listed as being on the Stone County waiting list for bed space to open in the state prison system. According to court records, he has been convicted in Stone County of multiple charges, including residential burglary.
