Two students from North Central Arkansas are among about 16,000 across the country and 214 in Arkansas named Wednesday as semifinalists in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
The two are Grace C. Beckham from Mountain Home High School Career Academies and David M. Smith of Harrison High School Conversion Charter school.
Beckham and Smith have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring.
Over 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship.
NMSC is a not-for-profit organization operating without government assistance. It was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
