This week’s headliner and closer for Mountain Home’s Friday Night Block Party is RIO. Music and activities will begin at 7 on the courthouse square in downtown Mountain Home. The event is free to the public and all are welcome.Rio is a semi-acoustic trio performing a wide variety of musical styles, from rock and blues to country and bluegrass, and folkie songwriter songs, too. The band consists of Mark and Robin Hargrove and Art Kershaw. At 14, Robin Hargrove formed her own gospel group, and as a member of Black Mountain Bluegrass performed at many festivals across the country, sharing the stage with Lester Flatt, Marty Stewart and Alison Krauss, in the 70s and 80s.Mark Hargrove’s musical career started in his teens at school dances and sock hops and has taken him to the Aladdin Casino in Las Vegas, the Palamino club in Winnipeg and Knott’s Berry Farm in California. He has played all over the country and opened for Restless Heart and Sawyer Brown.
Kershaw has performed many kinds of music, from bluegrass and country to rock and roll and jazz and has toured all over the country, both as a musician and as a sound engineer. He has opened for many acts, from Delbert McClinton to Peter Rowan to Chris Smither, and mixed sound for most of the bluegrass world.
The RIO members have been playing together for over 14 years now and have appeared at the Mountain Home Block Party, Red White and Blue Festival, Cotter Trout Festival, Big Creek Country Club, Bull Shoals Theater of the Arts, Bridge Bash and all the local performance venues, benefits and fundraisers.
A number of food vendors will be on hand selling their specialties, including barbecue, tacos, homemade cream soda, cupcakes, funnel cakes, kettle corn and lemonade, and the Baxter County Historical and Genealogical Society will be selling ice cream sundaes.
All attendees will have a chance to win door prizes during the band’s intermission.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs when they come out to enjoy what has become a summer tradition.
