When it comes to the Van Matre Senior Activity and Wellness Center located at Cooper Park in Mountain Home, there may be a number of misconceptions and myths to the services it provides. Senior center Director Robin Snyder was a recent guest of the Talk of the Town on KTLO-FM to debunk some of those misconceptions.

While the Van Matre Senior Center is known as a place for senior citizens to gather and play card games, Snyder says several more activities are offered.

Other common myths some may believe are that the Van Matre Senior Center is part of the city of Mountain Home since it’s located in Cooper Park, and it receives federal funding. Snyder says while the center does receive funding on a federal and state level, it’s not enough to cover its operating expenses.

Snyder adds for the year, the center is approximately 39 percent short of funding needed for seniors it serves.

For those interested in assisting the local Meals on Wheels program, one avenue is sponsorship for a week. The cost to feed one senior for seven days is $120.

Snyder also says the center is always in need of volunteers.
