Gloria Sanders, executive director of the Calico Rock Museum & Visitor Center, traveled to Hope earlier this month to assist the state’s historic preservation efforts. Governor Asa Hutchinson asked Sanders to make the trip to meet with individuals in the community who desire to create a Latino heritage museum.

The group has been considering purchasing an historic home in the community to be preserved and purposed for the museum. The property is located next door to the Clinton House Museum. The Governor’s Office has been coordinating with the Calico Rock Museum staff because of the success achieved in Izard County.

Sanders says, “It’s an honor to be asked by the governor to travel to Hope and other parts of the state to provide technical assistance and advice to start-up museums. It wasn’t very long ago that we were in their shoes. We started our museum with $500 in the bank and took a leap of faith to buy an historic building for $50,000. We continue to grow and expand because of the support of our community and the success we’ve achieved.”

While in Hope, Sanders conducted radio interviews, toured the property the group is looking to buy and gave advice on getting started, raising money and renovating the property.

The Calico Rock Museum & Visitor Center is open on Main Street in Calico Rock Monday-Saturday from 9 until 4. For more information, call 870-297-6100 or visit the museum’s website at www.calicorockmuseum.com.
