PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AP) Authorities in Arkansas have fatally shot a suspect following a car chase that began when a sheriff’s deputy spotted a fugitive.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says in a statement that the fugitive was wanted on several charges and fled as a passenger in a vehicle after being approached by the deputy Friday in Pine Bluff.
The vehicle later became stuck on a railroad crossing and the fugitive was apprehended after trying to run away.
Sheriff’s officials say the driver also ran and at one point raised a handgun toward another deputy.
Officers with the Arkansas Department of Correction used search dogs to later find the driver, who authorities say refused orders to drop the gun and was fatally shot by correction officers.
Authorities have not identified the person who was killed or the second suspect.
