Nearly a year-and-a-half after coaching her last basketball game for the Mountain Home School District, Brenda Yancey will be recognized for her time and dedication to the program. Yancey was selected to be a member of the MHHS Athletic Hall of Honor’s Class of 2019.

Yancey says she was nearly speechless when she received the news of her upcoming enshrinement.

Yancey is an alumnus of Flippin High School. She continued her playing career at North Arkansas College in Harrison and the former School of the Ozarks (currently College of the Ozarks) in Point Lookout. Yancey’s degree from the School of the Ozarks was in physical education.  Yancey then returned to Flippin where she was a student teacher under the supervision of legendary coaches Lou Wood and Jim Stafford.

Yancey’s first year of coaching was at Dardanelle, but she returned to the Twin Lakes Area in 1985 and became the head girls’ basketball coach and track coach at Mountain Home Junior High School. During her 33 years, her basketball teams were 811-248 with nine district championships. For the majority of her career, Mountain Home’s junior high teams were not part of a conference. Several times, Mountain Home was allowed to participate in a district tournament, but Yancey’s teams would have to enter as the bottom seed. Her teams ended up winning nine district championships and several other invitational tournaments.

Yancey says she has several memories from her career as the head coach of the Junior Lady Bombers.

Yancey’s players were also successful in the classroom. Her teams consistently held a grade point average of 3.5 to 4.0.

Yancey coached her last game in the winter of 2018. One of her biggest senses of pride from her coaching career is to see what her former players have gone on to become as adults.
