ABC/Randy HolmesAll this week Jimmy Kimmel is taping his ABC late night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! at New York’s Brooklyn Academy of Music. Things kicked off Monday with a rare talk show appearance by Bruce Springsteen.
The two chatted about a number of things, including a gig where he opened for the 1970s comedy duo Cheech & Chong back in his early days that went “Up in Smoke.”
“I came out and we played about five songs, I thought it was going really good.” But, “I was sitting at the piano and somebody tapped me on the shoulder and said, ‘That’s enough.'”
Springsteen also discussed his concert film and documentary, Western Stars, opening nationwide on Friday.
The Boss says his movie explores people’s different definitions of freedom throughout their lives.
“When you’re young it’s all about, ‘I wanna go where I wanna go, I wanna do what I wanna do, I’m gonna be who I wanna be.'”
“That’s okay for your 20s,” he continues, “But somewhere in your 30s… your definition of freedom has to expand — family, your civic life… community that you’re involved in. If it doesn’t, you get stuck out in the cold.”
The two also discussed “Springsteen: His Hometown,” which is running through 2020. The exhibit, which focuses on the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer’s contribution and connection to Monmouth County, New Jersey features more than 150 pieces of memorabilia on display — including something that surprised him — a guitar belonging to a member of his family that dates back to the 1800s.
The conversation also turned to Bruce’s children, who seem unphased by the fact that their old man is a rock legend: “Kids don’t wanna go anywhere and see 50 thousand people cheering for their parents.”
