The Mountain Home High School football team was tied with Sylvan Hills midway through the second quarter, but the Bears used two late touchdowns in the period, including a 99-yard score, to stun the Bombers and propel them to the win. Brad Haworth has the details.
Listen:
After a great punt by Dylan Poush pinned Sylvan Hills inside their own 1-yard line, the Bears, leading 21-14 at the time, got a 99-yard touchdown run from Taevion Cunningham, with less than a minute left in the first half that proved to be a backbreaker, and the Bears went on to a 49-14 victory.
After Sylvan Hills jumped out to a 14-0 lead, Mountain Home was able to take advantage of a pair of Bears’ fumbles to tie the game. Lawson Stockton finished one drive, with a 31-yard touchdown scamper. The ensuing kickoff was fumbled by Sylvan Hills and recovered by the Bombers. Four plays later, Mountain Home got a 12-yard scoring run from Gage Hershberger to tie the game.
Sylvan hills answered just over one minute later, when Cunningham broke free for a 51-yard touchdown. After Mountain Home was forced to punt, the Bears were backed up inside their own 1-yard line. Cunningham would score two plays later on a 99-yard run, shifting all the momentum to Sylvan Hills, and Mountain Home never recovered.
In the second half, Sylvan Hills put together three sustained drives, running 36 plays. Mountain Home ran just 10 plays, for a total of 13 yards in the second half.
With the win Sylvan Hills improves to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the 6A East Conference. Mountain Home falls to 0-8 and 0-5. The Bombers host Searcy next Friday night.
