Twenty-five-year-old Carl Jacob Jones of Mountain View appeared in Baxter County Circuit Court Thursday and pled guilty to charges stemming from the theft of a truck from a vehicle repair business in Big Flat in January. He was sentenced to seven years in prison.
When the truck was stolen, a number of tools were in the Toyota Tacoma and others were found missing from inside the building.
In addition to the Baxter County theft, Jones was in trouble in Stone County, and while he was in the jail there, he made a major mistake when, during a telephone call, he offered to use some of the stolen items as collateral for his bail bond.
A criminal investigator with the Stone County Sheriff’s Office monitored Jones’ call. He was aware a chainsaw and a number of hand tools had been taken in the theft being worked by Baxter County Sheriff’s Office investigators. The stolen truck was located at a residence in Mountain View where Jones was reported to have lived with a relative.
In addition, the relative said she found several tools in a plastic shopping bag on the floor of her carport.
When investigators inspected the tools, they were able to match brand names on them — including wrenches and socket sets — all of which had been provided by the victim of the theft at Big Flat.
The Baxter County sentence will run concurrently with prison time Jones received in Stone County on a number of charges, including residential burglary and theft of property.
