The Mountain Home High School basketball teams ended with mixed results Tuesday at Marion, and the win was in come-from-behind fashion. Matt Sharp has the details.
Listen:
The Lady Bombers began the varsity action by edging out the Lady Patriots 43-40. Mountain Home started off with a 1-0 advantage, but Marion led for the remainder of the half, as they forced the Lady Bombers into 10 turnovers. Things turned around in the second half, as Mountain Home took better care of the ball. In addition, they forced Daedrianna Cail, the Lady Patriots’ main inside presence, into foul trouble by attacking the basket. The Lady Bombers took their second lead just before the third quarter ended on a three by Kate Gilbert. The two teams exchanged the lead two more times and had a tie in the final quarter. Mountain Home was up three with the last few seconds ticking down, and they were able to move the ball around to avoid being fouled long enough for the clock to hit zero.
Gilbert led the Lady Bombers with 20 points. For Marion, Cail scored 18 points.
Mountain Home improves to 14-3 on the season and 3-1 in the 5A-East. The Lady Patriots fall to 8-11 and 1-3.
The Bomber boys were not as fortunate as their female counterparts, as they lost to Marion 61-48. The two teams had two lead changes and three ties between them in the first half. The Patriots were able to get a little distance, as they went into the locker room up eight. Mountain Home kept it close for the first few minutes of the third quarter, but Marion pulled away as Detrick Reeves Jr., who was quiet in the first half, suddenly lit up in the second half. In addition, the Patriots stepped up the pressure defense to build a lead as big as 18.
The Bombers were led by Mat Jones with 22 points, and Wyatt Gilbert chipped in 21. Reeves had 23 points for Marion, Darrius Waterford finished with 15, and B.J. Johnson ended up with 10.
Mountain Home drops to 10-7 overall and 1-3 in the league. The Patriots are now 6-10 and 2-2.
Both Mountain Home teams will return to the Hangar Friday as Nettleton comes in from Jonesboro.
In other 5A-East boys’ action, Searcy defeated Greene County Tech 73-59, West Memphis got past Jonesboro 47-43, and Nettleton topped Paragould 60-47. On the girls’ side, Tech beat Searcy 58-44, West Memphis squeaked by Jonesboro 61-58, and Nettleton grabbed the 49-41 win over Paragould.
