A Mountain Home High School alum is receiving recognition for his accomplishments as a college athlete. The Great American Conference (GAC) announced its All-Decade team for cross country, and Lane Alexander is one of two former male runners to be selected to the team.
Alexander says it came as quite a surprise when he received the news.
Listen:
Alexander was a Mulerider from 2015 through 2018. During his time in Magnolia, he was a three-time All-GAC selection with two on the first team, and he claimed one GAC Runner of the Week honor. By the time Alexander’s career at SAU was over, he had won the 2018 Lois Davis Invitational, finished in the top 10 seven other times and had six other top 20 finishes.
Alexander says the biggest memory of his time as a Mulerider came in track and field. At SAU, he was exposed to the steeplechase event, where he would jump over hurdles. Five hurdles had dry barriers, and the other had a wet barrier in which runners would jump into a water pit. Alexander says the biggest memory was in the steeplechase at the GAC Championship Meet.
Listen:
Alexander is working at another school in NCAA Division II. He is a certified trainer with the University of West Alabama in Livingston, where he is also working on his master’s degree. Alexander says he works with the cross country, track and cheerleading programs.

The other SAU alum on the men’s All-Decade team also grew up as an area resident. Mickey Hammer, a Marshall native, was the GAC Male Runner of the Year in 2012, a two-time All-GAC First Team selection and a five-time GAC Runner of the Week. He also received All-Region honors in 2011 and 2012 after logging top 20 finishes in both regional meets. In the 2012-2013 school year, Hammer received the school’s Auburn Smith Male Athlete of the Year award.
