
The postseason began on a big note for the Mountain Home High School girls’ basketball team, as they played the opening game in Class 5A State Tournament Tuesday at Russellville. Matt Sharp has the details.

For the third time this year, the Lady Bombers defeated the top team in the Arkansas Sports Media’s Class 5A rankings with a 50-43 victory over Vilonia. Mountain Home came out scoring the first six points of the game, but its lead at the end of the first quarter was just one. The Lady Eagles had a pair of threes in the second quarter to tie the game and later take the lead. Vilonia was up four at halftime, but was outscored by the Lady Bombers 10-0 in the third quarter. The Lady Eagles cut the margin back to a point in the final period, but they would get no closer. Vilonia was forced to start fouling, and Mountain Home built a double-digit advantage before going on to win by seven.
Kate Gilbert led the Lady Bombers with 19 points, and Addison Yates added 16. For the Lady Eagles, Lauren Patterson scored 18 points, and Paige Kelley chipped in 10.
Vilonia’s season ends with a record of 25-3. Mountain Home improves to 22-6 and will return to Russellville Thursday evening to meet the winner between Hot Springs and Watson Chapel at 7 p.m.
