A significant change for high school basketball in Arkansas is a little over two years away from taking effect. During the annual vote, the Arkansas Activities Association’s governing body approved the use of a 35-second shot clock for all senior high boys’ and girls’ games beginning in the 2022-2023 school year.

The proposal was passed by a vote of 183-69. Mountain Home Athletic Director Mitch Huskey says he was part of the majority in favor of the measure.

A percentage of coaches in the state may have their game plans altered by the new feature. Huskey says he has talked to several coaches that have that concern.

While the majority of the schools are in favor of the shot clock, there are some other concerns. One issue is the potential cost of installing the extra clock in a gym or above a backboard. Huskey says his biggest concern is making sure he has someone to operate it.
