A Mount Vernon man has harvested Missouri’s first elk in modern history, according to the state’s Department of Conservation (DOC). The state’s initial elk hunting firearm season in modern history kicked off Saturday.
In a Facebook post, DOC reports Joe Benthall harvested a 2.5-year-old bull elk Saturday afternoon on National Park Service property near Log Yard by Ellington. He is one of five Missouri hunters who were selected for elk permits.
The other four hunters are
Bill Clark from Van Buren
Michael Buschjost of St. Thomas
Samuel Schultz of Winfield
Eugene Guilkey from Liberty
The elk firearms season runs through Dec. 20 for the other four hunters.
