On the 12th anniversary of the 2009 ice storm that devastated northern Arkansas, the eastern portion of the Twin Lakes Area has been included in a winter weather advisory issued Tuesday by the National Weather Service’s North Little Rock office.
The advisory covers Fulton and Izard counties in the listening area, along with Independence, Sharp, Lawrence and Randolph counties. The advisory calls for light, accumulating snow, with amounts generally less than 1 inch. Localized heavier amounts may be possible.
It was on Jan. 26, 2009, that the three-day ice storm arrived and pelted the northern third of the state with up to 2 inches of ice and left thousands without power, some up to a month.
Meteorologist Dennis Cavanaugh of the National Weather Service gives this update on the approaching winter weather.
The weather system is expected to come through the area in the early morning hours before daylight, and Cavanaugh says it will not stay around long.
A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow will cause some travel difficulties, including snow-covered roads or limited visibility. Primary impacts will be on lesser-traveled roads, as well as bridges and overpasses.
