Monday basketball results include Melbourne girls winning state opener

State tournaments began Monday for high school basketball in Arkansas with mixed results for area teams.

Melbourne’s girls had a dominating victory playing the first game of the Class 2A State Tournament on their home floor. The Lady Bearkatz invoked the mercy rule, as they routed Riverside 77-26.

Both of Lead Hill’s teams watched their season come to an end in the Class 1A State Tournament at West Side High School in Greers Ferry, as they were swept by Mount Vernon-Enola. The Tigers lost the boys’ game to the Warhawks 82-68. Lead Hill did not fare any better in the girls’ contest with a 58-30 loss to Mount Vernon-Enola.

Bergman had mixed results in the opening two games of the Class 3A State Tournament at Clinton. The Lady Panthers began action with a 38-32 victory over Episcopal Collegiate. It was a different result in the boys’ game, as Bergman was eliminated by Lamar 64-57.
