A fugitive from Mountain Home was arrested Wednesday morning after being discovered under a house. In addition to being wanted locally for allegedly stealing and trying to cash checks, 30-year-old Michael Anthony Behrens is wanted by authorities in Alabama on felony charges.

Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery says his office received a call shortly before 8 Wednesday morning from a homeowner on Old Tracy Ferry Road reporting she had discovered someone under her house in the crawl space. The suspect fled, but responding deputies were able to locate the man, identified at Behrens, along State Highway 5 South.

Behrens was wanted locally in connection with a forgery case in January. The victim reported several checks missing from his business checkbook after being alerted by his bank someone was attempting to cash one of them. The bank refused to cash the check and turned over surveillance video of the suspect and his vehicle, with others inside, to the sheriff’s office. After investigating the case, a warrant was issued for Behrens’ arrest.

Behrens is charged with felony counts of forgery in the second degree, failure to appear and revocation of a bench warrant and misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass, possession of drug paraphernalia and nonpayment of fines. His bond is set at $5,000, but he is being held without bond on the revocation warrant and a warrant from Alabama.

Behrens is wanted by law enforcement in Covington County, Alabama on charges of failing to appear in court on theft and drug charges.
