Two volunteers with the Twin Lakes Literacy Council were honored Friday by the Adult Learning Alliance.

Billie Seef was named the 2021 Win Rockefeller Leadership Award winner, which is presented to those whose support of literacy shows the highest level of commitment, dedication and leadership to a literacy council or initiative.

Audrey Dollar was also selected as the state’s Tutor of the Year for her commitment to tutoring during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Both awards were announced Friday during a livestream celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Adult Learning Alliance of Arkansas. Both Seef and Dollar appeared on the livestream, issuing brief comments on winning their respective awards.

Seef has been tutoring for 30 years and is longest-serving volunteer tutor in the state, the Adult Learning Alliance says.

Seef talks about how she got involved with literacy tutoring.

Dollar joined the Twin Lakes Literacy Council in 2002, and has been tutoring for 19 years.

When the COVID-19 pandemic stopped in-person tutoring, the 88-year-old educated herself about online meetings so she could continue to meet with her students remotely.

Dollar says that she prefers in-person interactions to online instruction.

She was placed on a waiting list for heart surgery last fall, yet continued to tutor her students while awaiting that surgery.

The Twin Lakes Literacy Council provides volunteer tutors to help people improve their reading, math and language skills.
