A 20-year-old Salem man jailed on a first-degree murder charge has been charged with additional felonies following the discovery of an alleged plot to escape from the Fulton County Jail.

Jacoby Auston Goehler has been charged with first-degree criminal attempt to escape and eight counts of possession of weapons by an incarcerated person. Goehler has been jailed since his arrest in late April in connection with the slaying of 19-year-old Davidlee Stansbury of Salem.

Stansbury was last seen alive being picked up by a light-colored pickup truck at his house around 4 a.m. on the morning of April 23 and was reported missing that evening after he failed to return home. Stansbury’s father told authorities that Stansbury had received a phone call and several electronic messages from Goehler asking for help in moving a trailer in Viola.

Stansbury’s body was located April 26, a half-mile west of Republican Road in northern Fulton County. A co-defendant in the case – 19-year-old Travis Eugene Barker of Jefferson City, Mo., who also faces a first-degree murder charge – allegedly told authorities that Goehler shot Stansbury in revenge for allegedly raping one of Goehler’s relatives.

Goehler’s mother, 41-year-old Jennifer Harnden of Salem, is charged with conspiracy to commit murder in the first degree, a Class A felony, in connection with the crime.

According to Areawide Media, authorities were informed Goehler was plotting his escape. A search of the jail found Goehler had “broken a vent in the bathroom of his barracks and was making weapons.”

In Goehler’s bed area, authorities located eight, 1.5-inch by 8.75-inch metal pieces, along with six, small metal pieces and a blanket which had been torn into two strips.

Investigator Dale Weaver later learned Goehler was planning to use the items in a “kill or be killed” situation “in an attempt to escape incarceration.” Areawide Media says it was believed Goehler was waiting to speak with his attorney before carrying out his plan and that Goehler was thinking about escaping by scaling the recreational area wall.
