For the second consecutive year, Bomberfest – the premier event kicking off the school year at Mountain Home Public Schools – has been canceled due to COVID-19.Mountain Home Public Schools announced the event was canceled Tuesday afternoon, “in response to the sharp increase in COVID-19 cases locally, officials have decided not to host Bomberfest this year.”
The event, which is hosted by First Security Bank at Bomber Stadium and features a Blue and Gold scrimmage and a BBQ cookoff sponsored by KTLO, was originally scheduled for Aug. 13.
Mountain Home Athletic Director Mitch Huskey says the decision was made after much consideration.
“Ultimately we just don’t want Bomberfest to be a catalyst for this contagious variant to spread. After discussing with First Security Bank representatives and representatives from KTLO, we all agreed that we needed to call the event off now, so that those planning to participate as BBQ competitors or vendors did not lose money in preparation for an event that would not take place.”
Huskey says that while the cancellation is disappointing, it also speaks to the community’s commitment to supporting student athletes.
“Bomberfest is a fun event for everyone in the community, but I think everyone who is normally involved can prioritize and see that our student athletes having the opportunity for regular-season play is the most important thing. None of our supporters would want an outbreak of illness after Bomberfest to keep any of our athletes from participating in upcoming games.”
