KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot will participate in the nationwide tests of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

Both tests will begin at 1:20 and are coordinated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Communications Commission.

The emergency alert that will be heard on KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot will be similar to the regular monthly EAS broadcast by the station. Following an alert tone, the test message message will state, “This is a test of the National Emergency Alert System. This system was developed by broadcast and cable operators in voluntary cooperation with the Federal Communications Commission and local authorities to keep you informed in the event of an emergency. If this had been an actual emergency, an official message would have followed the tone alert you heard at the start of this message. No action is required.” The EAS portion of the test is scheduled to last for one minute.

The federal government is also sending the emergency alert to television stations and cable TV providers.

Suddenlink advises that the emergency alert signal will last about five minutes and will interrupt TV channels. Once the test is complete, Suddenlink customers may need to reboot their equipment to resume watching TV. To do this, unplug the device’s power, wait 10 seconds and then plug the device back in.

Cell phone users that have opted in to receive WEA alerts will also see an alert pushed out to their devices at 1:20 Wednesday afternoon. That test message should read, “This is a test of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”

The EAS and WEA tests are intended to ensure that public safety officials have the methods and systems that will deliver urgent alerts and warnings to the public in times of emergency or disaster. This will be the sixth nationwide test of the EAS system.
