An Izard County man faces an aggravated assault charge after he allegedly fired shots at an employee of a land surveying company.
According to the probable cause affidavit in the case, 41-year-old Hans Ivan Oss faces a Class D felony after the incident on Aug. 2 near Oxford.
While conducting a survey in a newly developed area, the surveyor heard a loud bang and described the noise as very close. He began to call out “Hey” to anyone in the area and when he finally received a response, said “I am walking toward you.”
The man the surveyor encountered identified himself as Hans Oss and when the surveyor asked what the noise was, Oss reportedly replied, “I shot at you.”
On Aug. 10, the owner of the surveying company contacted Oss and recorded the call, citing his policy to record business calls. The owner asked Oss if he shot at the employee, with Oss allegedly replying “yes” and saying it was a “grave error in judgment.”
After the recording was turned over to authorities, Oss met with investigators and confessed to discharging the firearm at the surveyor. Oss again said it was a “grave error” and that he did not know why he had committed such a dangerously irresponsible act.
