The juvenile that shot a Sharp County deputy from the back of the officer’s patrol car last week was reportedly wielding a .357 handgun.

According to a news release from Sharp County Sheriff Mark Counts, Deputy Marc Boyd was injured in his arm Friday morning and transported by ambulance to White River Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Boyd later spoke to the Spring River Chronicle, where he said he was in good spirits and confirmed to the newspaper that the weapon involved was a .357. The newspaper also reported that the juvenile was 11-year-old boy, details that were not included in the initial report of the shooting.

The incident began last Friday when authorities received a call from a motorist of a possible runaway juvenile traveling on a bicycle on State Highway 175 between Wirth and Hardy.

Boyd and a Hardy police officer responded to the area, spoke to the subject and determined the juvenile was not a runaway. The deputy then loaded the juvenile’s bicycle in his vehicle, secured the subject in the back seat and stopped at a gas station to buy the juvenile some ice cream.

While transporting the juvenile to his residence, the juvenile pulled a pistol out of his backpack, shot through the vehicle’s protective cage and struck Boyd in the arm.

In an interview with the Spring River Chronicle, Counts said that the boy would be placed in a juvenile detention facility. Counts said the case has been turned over to 3rd Judicial Prosecuting Attorney Ryan Cooper, but was uncertain what charges the 11-year-old would face.
