The list of area schools with a football program is expected to grow in the near future. The Izard County School District is planning on adding the sport to the athletic program following the completion of the construction project for Cougar Stadium and Track and Field Complex.
The project began with conversations two years ago. Izard County Superintendent Fred Walker says it originally began solely as a track complex because of the number of athletes competing, but it evolved into something more.

Izard County is starting a Mighty Mite program this fall. They’re also going to start having practices for junior high this year, and they plan on starting a season next year. High school football would most likely begin in the 2024-2025 school year.
It’s currently unknown which form of football the Cougars will participate in. Walker says he’s been intrigued by the eight-man game and its growth in the state.
