According to statistics provided by the ASPCA, nearly 920,000 shelter animals are euthanized throughout the United States each year. That number is down from 2.6 million 10 years ago, and one local organization is doing its part to lower the numbers further. The Humane Society of North Central Arkansas is a no-kill animal shelter with a goal of protecting, caring for and reducing the population of neglected, abandoned, homeless, unwanted or abused animals within Baxter County and its surrounding area.

As a no-kill shelter, the local humane society has to address several expenses. Shelter manager Carolyn Carter was a recent guest of the Talk of the Town on KTLO-FM, and she says donations are always needed since the organization receives no federal funding, and most of the proceeds come from its thrift store.

The Humane Society of North Central Arkansas works to ensure that all the animals receive adequate food, water, shelter and medical attention. An attempt is also made to place all animals in homes where they will receive proper care. Because it’s a no-kill shelter, there is often a waiting list for animals in need of forever homes.

In addition to monetary funding, Carter says there are certain items the local shelter will accept as donations.

Carter goes on to say the money and the pet the humane society receives is significant because they don’t just feed the animals at the shelter. She says the local nonprofit also has low-income program.
