SPRINGIELD, Mo. (AP) – Springfield police say officers shot and killed a man after he pointed a gun at them outside an apartment complex.
Police said in a news release that officers went to the complex Thursday afternoon after receiving a report that an armed man was trying to break into an apartment. One 911 caller reported hearing shots fired.
The officers found the armed man, later identified as 52-year-old Richard McCormick, on the sidewalk when the arrived. The release said he was uncooperative and that an effort to use bean bag rounds wasn’t successful.
The release said McCormick continued to refuse to comply with commands and pointed a gun at officers. That’s when two officers fired at McCormick, striking him multiple times. He was then rushed to a hospital, where he died.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, as is standard procedure.
