An area highway had to be temporarily closed Saturday due to hazardous weather conditions. Searcy County Sheriff Kenny Cassell says both lanes of U.S. Highway 65 at Backbone Mountain south of Marshall have been reopened.

Sheriff Cassell says the road was shut down after vehicles stalled in the area. Members of the sheriff’s office were assisted by the Arkansas State Police, the Arkansas Highway Patrol, the Searcy County Office of Emergency Management, the Searcy County Road Department and two wrecker services in clearing the highway.

In Mountain Home, a police department spokesperson says the city streets were mainly clear, though there may be some slick spots on some roads. The sheriff’s offices in Baxter and Marion counties have not had any reports of accidents or hazardous road conditions.

Just before noon Sunday, IDriveArkansas.com was showing most of the area’s major highways were clear.  Arkansas Highway 7 was covered in slush from Lead Hill to the Boone/Newton county line, and U.S. Highway 65 had slush in the city of Harrison.

A spokesperson with the Ozark County Sheriff’s dispatch says the roads are mainly clear, and the same is being shown on the Missouri Department of Transportation’s traveler information map.
