An area high school is in search of a new head football coach. After seven years at the helm, Joel Wells announced he’s stepping away from the sidelines at Harrison High School.

According to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Wells announced his decision to the team last week. He will stay with the district as assistant athletic director and head golf coach.

Under Wells’ leadership, the Goblins compiled a 61-21 record overall and a 37-11 conference mark. That includes three consecutive 5A-West Conference outright championships from 2018-20, a fourth league title in 2017 as a result of a four-way tie for first place and a string of 22 consecutive conference victories. He also led Harrison to the Class 5A state semifinals in 2020 and the quarterfinals in 2019.

Athletic Director Chris Pratt said the school’s coaching vacancy has already drawn following Wells’ announcement, but there’s no immediate timetable on finding a replacement.
