
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the death toll continues to climb and several counties in North Central Arkansas and southern Missouri are among the leaders in a category they don’t want to be in: cumulative death rates. Six counties in our area are in the Top 20 in Arkansas, three are in the Top 15 in Missouri and one area county is ranked in the Top 100 counties in the United States.
The website Stacker compiled a list of the counties with highest cumulative COVID-19 death rates in both states using data from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Counties are ranked by the highest death rate per 100,000 residents as of Feb. 8, 2021.
In North Central Arkansas, Fulton County leads the way, ranked No. 3 in the state with a death rate of 657 deaths per 100,000 residents. Fulton County has the 82nd highest rate among all counties in the country. The county has seen 82 total deaths.
Newton County is ranked No. 6 in Arkansas with a death rate of 580 per 100,000. That puts Newton County at No. 168 nationwide. Forty-five people have died in Newton County due to COVID-19.
Baxter County is next at No. 8 with a death rate of 525 per 100,000 residents which puts it at No. 284 in the nation. Total deaths in Baxter County stands at 220.
Searcy County is No. 11 in Arkansas and number 408 nationally with a death rate of 495 per 100,000. Thirty-nine people have lost their lives to COVID-19 in Searcy County.
Marion County checks in at No. 19 in the state with a death rate of 455 per 100,000 residents. Marion County ranks number 577 in the nation. Seventy-six people have died from COVID-19 in Marion County.
Izard County is ranked No. 20 in Arkansas and No. 578 in the U.S. with a rate of 455 per 100,000 people. In Izard County, 62 people have lost their lives due to COVID-19.
Stone County follows at No. 24 in the state with a rate of 424 per 100,000. In the nation, Stone County ranks at No. 782. There have been 53 COVID-19 deaths in Stone County.
Checking in at No. 30 in Arkansas is Boone County with a rate of 409 deaths per 100,000 residents. That ranks Boone County at No. 886 in the United States. So far, 153 people in Boone County have died from COVID-19.
In southern Missouri, Douglas County is ranked No. 7 in the state with a rate of 523 per 100,000 people. Douglas County ranks No. 297 in the U.S. As of Tuesday, 69 people have lost their battle with COVID-19 in Douglas County.
Ozark County is next in line at No. 8 in the state with a rate of 523 per 100,000, which puts Ozark County at No. 298 in the country. Forty-eight people have died from COVID-19 in Ozark County.
Howell County is ranked No. 15 in Missouri and No. 528 in the U.S. with a death rate of 464 per 100,000 residents. Howell County has lost 186 residents to COVID-19.
Little River County has the highest rate in Arkansas at 693 per 100,000. In Missouri, it’s Gasconade County at 632 deaths per 100,000 residents.
