The mother of a Mountain Home man accused of threatening her and another person with a knife and hammer has filed a petition seeking an order of protection to keep her son away from her.

Thirty-one-year-old Terry Kohen was arrested Feb. 3, after police were called to a residence along South Church Street.

Kohen was later booked into the Baxter County jail on charges of aggravated assault, terroristic threatening, violating his parole and criminal mischief.

In the affidavit, the mother writes of her son’s behavior. She contends in the petition filed Feb. 10 he is refusing mental health treatments, including not taking his medicines for eight-to-10 months.

She concludes, “due to his illness,” Kohen cannot live in her home.

THE ARREST

According to the probable cause affidavit, when Mountain Home officers arrived on scene, Kohen was standing on the porch of the residence holding a hammer in his right hand.

The officers ordered Kohen to drop the hammer, and he complied. After Kohen was cuffed, he refused to answer questions and repeatedly cursed the policemen, according to the incident report.

MOTHER AND ANOTHER THREATENED

When police talked to Kohen’s 60-year-old mother and a 46-year-old male involved in the incident, they said Kohen threatened them both and ordered them off what he claimed was his property.

The incident report notes Kohen’s mother is the owner, not her son.

The victims told police they got into a vehicle owned by the male and pulled into the roadway, and Kohen ran into the house and armed himself with a hammer.

He is alleged to have used the hammer to strike the vehicle the victims were in. Kohen is reported to have also pulled out a knife and tried to slash a tire.

The victims reported to police they became frightened for their lives and left the area until police arrived.

Kohen was taken to the Baxter County Detention Center and booked. His bond is set at $5,000.

SIMILAR INCIDENT IN COTTER

Several years also, Kohen was involved in another knife attack.

In the earlier incident, Kohen was charged with attacking a man who lived in a neighboring unit at the Country Aire Apartment complex, located off Harding Boulevard in Cotter.

The 56-year-old-victim in that attack told investigators he was asleep when Kohen broke into his front door shortly before 5 a.m.

He said the noise awakened him, and he remembered Kohen saying something about hearing voices. The victim said Kohen was also upset because he believed the victim had been laughing at him.

In the incident involving the stabbing of the neighbor, Kohen was charged with aggravated residential burglary, battery in the second degree and obstruction of governmental operations.

He was also charged with an earlier break-in at a Cotter liquor store in which a quantity of cigarette packages were taken.

In the break-in, Kohen was charged with commercial burglary, criminal mischief and a misdemeanor charge of criminal trespassing and theft.

The stabbing of the neighbor resulted in Kohen being sentenced to 13 years in prison.

According to court records, Kohen was on parole when the recent incident with his mother took place.
