The three-person race for District Judge for District 10, which covers Baxter and Marion counties, is down to two people after one of the candidates has dropped out. Bob Lowery made the announcement Tuesday.

Lowery said in a news release, “I cannot express enough the gratitude I feel for the outpouring of support the people of Baxter and Marion counties have shown my campaign, however, for personal health reasons I will be stepping out of this race. I still believe it is vitally important that we have judges throughout our court system who know their role as interpreters of the constitution and law as it is written; not those who wish to be activist, super-legislators. I pray the voters will take a hard look at the other two candidates and press them to commit to these same ideals. Finally, I want to thank my wife Jan. She is my rock, an inspiration to our children, Anna and Forrest, and the best volunteer any candidate could ask for.”

With Lowery withdrawing from the race, Jodi Carney and Sam Pasthing are looking to fill the position currently held by Judge Christopher Carter who was appointed to fill the position following former judge Jason Duffy’s resignation in October.

So what happens during the election process with one less candidate for the position? Baxter County and Circuit Clerk Canda Reese says the ballots for the primary election are already completed, so voters will still see Lowery’s name when they cast their vote.

Lowery was elected to the Baxter County Quorum Court in 2018, resigning from that position to run in the election for district judge. He previously served as a district judge in Sevier County for 21 years and as a circuit judge for the 9th Judicial District for two years. Lowery is also a former deputy public defender, deputy prosecuting attorney, court administrator for the Arkansas Supreme Court and a tenured delegate with the Arkansas Bar Association.

In addition to his seat on the quorum court, Lowery resigned as the president of the Baxter County Republican Men’s Club, the second vice-chair of the Baxter County Republican Committee and as a member of the Baxter County Republican Committee.
