The Melbourne School Board has selected a new leader for the high school boys’ basketball program. Jason Qualls will lead the Bearkatz following the announcement of Scott Bowlin’s retirement.
According to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Qualls is a Missouri native who has spent much of his coaching career in the Show Me State. Qualls spent this year as an assistant coach at Norwood, and he had the same position at Licking from 2019 to 2021. He also served as a head coach at Alton from 2017 to 2019 and at Couch from 2003 to 2007.
Bowlin has been on the sidelines for 39 seasons, including the last three at Melbourne. He led the Bearkatz to two conference and district championships. Prior to his time at Melbourne, he won state championships in 2007 and 2009 at Greene County Tech High School in Paragould.
