The operation of a hospital has several key components, including doctors, nurses, x-ray techicians, cafeteria staff, janitors and more. For Baxter Regional Medical Center, another part considered as important is its auxiliary services, and this year, the hospital is celebrating 60 years of having the assistance of its volunteers.

Baxter Regional Director of Volunteer Services Becky Rose says the volunteers are normally the first and last people seen when an individual comes to the hospital.

Many of Baxter Regional’s volunteers are retired from a previous line of work, but the auxiliary services will accept anyone that is qualified. The application process includes a criminal background check. Potential volunteers will then be called in for an interview to determine their interests and the needs the hospital may have.

Rose says another option is a corporate group, featuring volunteers that still have a full-time job.

Rose describes the volunteer services as a two-way street. She says not only is the hospital getting the necessary assistance, but the volunteers are also doing service for themselves.

In a later story, Rose will discuss additional assistance provided by the auxiliary services and the celebrations of its 60 years.
