Marion County man arrested after attempting to steal dog, choke girlfriend

A Marion County man has been arrested after allegedly stealing his girlfriend’s dog and choking her when she attempted to get it back.Thirty-eight-year-old David Hamilton was booked into the Marion County Jail June 29.

According to the probable cause affidavit, deputies were dispatched to a residence in Marion County for a report of a stolen dog. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with a witness who stated he was visiting with the victim when Hamilton showed up to the residence uninvited.

The witness stated Hamilton was allegedly demanding the victim return home with him, but she stated she did not want to.

The witness states when the victim refused, Hamilton allegedly took the dog without the victim’s permission and got into his vehicle. The victim allegedly jumped into the vehicle to try to retrieve the dog, when Hamilton began to drive off.

After authorities left the first residence, dispatch advised of an altercation between the victim and Hamilton at another residence.

Upon arrival, deputies were met by the victim who stated while she was in the vehicle Hamilton hit her across the face and began to choke her. The victim stated Hamilton was driving towards her mother’s house when a deer jumped in the road in front of them causing him to slow the vehicle.

The victim then stated she jumped out of the moving vehicle and ran to her mother’s house, where Hamilton arrived looking for her.

Hamilton was charged with a felony count of aggravated assault on a family or household member, and misdemeanor counts of theft of property and criminal trespassing.

He has been released on a $25,000 bond.
