The Arkansas Activities Association’s governing body held its annual meeting to vote on whether to include various proposals into future handbooks. One of the main proposals approved is an increase in the number of games various teams can play in a regular season.
By a vote of 137-9, basketball teams in schools with football can now play 30 games before the postseason begins, and non-football schools will get 36. In addition, volleyball teams will be allowed 30 regular season matches, and soccer teams will have a maximum of 24 matches.
Mountain Home athletic director Mitch Huskey says the purpose of the proposal was to keep student athletes from playing too many games in a season.

The new bylaw will go into effect for the upcoming school year.
Another proposal that could have affected Mountain Home dealt with competitive equity when it comes to private schools, but it failed by a vote of 42-104. It would have eliminated the factor in all sports except for football, allow schools to return to traditional eight-team conferences and restore the previous balance.
Huskey says he voted with the majority against the proposal, even though he understood its intent.
