A man who broke into a house in Elizabeth, looked through DVD movies to choose titles he wanted to take, then made a major mistake by leaving his fingerprints on one of the DVD cases he discarded, appeared in Baxter County Circuit Court last Monday.
Twenty-eight-year-old Jacob Lee Hoffman of Elizabeth pled not guilty to the charges against him.
MOVIES, A DVD PLAYER AND TELEVISON TAKEN
In addition to 40 movies, Hoffman is reported to have taken what he needed to watch them.
The owner of the residence, which is used as a vacation home, reported that a television set and a DVD player were taken from the house, along with some food.
Hoffman was arrested July 19 in connection with the break-in and theft that was initially reported in late June.
The owner told investigators he came to the home June 26 and found that someone had broken in and taken a number of items.
While investigators worked the break-in, they found fingerprints on one of the DVD movie cases. The print was determined to be Hoffman’s.
Hoffman is charged with felony counts of residential burglary and theft of property. He is being charged as a habitual offender that could result in more time being added any sentence he receives.
According to the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office, Hoffman has seven prior felony convictions in Texas.
