An individual smoking a cigarette while lying in bed reportedly led to a residential fire in Gassville and caused minor structural damage Monday night. The homeowner and a firefighter suffered smoke inhalation. The homeowner was treated at the scene, and the firefighter was transported to Baxter Health and later released.
According to Gassville Fire Chief Michael Glotzl, firefighters were dispatched just before 9 to the residence at 108 Church Street. Crews arrived on the scene to find the fire was contained to the second floor of the structure, and the homeowner was attempting to extinguish the blaze as four mattresses were burning.
Crews were able to extinguish the fire before it could spread to the lower level. Sixteen personnel were on the scene with four engines for nearly three hours. The Gassville Fire Department was assisted by the Cotter Fire Department, the Cotter-Gassville Rural Fire Protection District and the Gassville Police Department.
