The Baxter County Quorum Court Personnel Committee approved the hiring of two new deputies for the Baxter County Sheriff’s Department earlier this year.
During Tuesday’s Talk of the Town program on KTLO-FM, Sheriff John Montgomery said although the positions have been approved, it was just the first step. It still needs to go through the budget process for funding. Once funded, it might still be next year before the new deputies can be able to utilized.
Listen:
Montgomery says it was a big deal the Quorum Court was able to provide salary increases for current deputies at the beginning of the year because of the amount of time it takes to replace them.
The new deputies still need to go through the training process with the next academy starting after the first of the year.
Listen:
When asked if two positions were enough, Montgomery states in truth its not, but you have to be able to pay for the personnel and equipment they will use.
Listen:
The last time the sheriff’s office was able to add a new deputy was two years ago. It was also the first time in 25 years the Baxter County Quorum Court approved an additional deputy.
