A Stone County man has been arrested after allegedly shouting obscenities at a woman and hitting her in the face with a towel while on the river.

According to the probable cause affidavit, 41-year-old Calvin Crutchfield has been charged with third degree domestic battering after he became drunk on the river and started hitting the woman he was with.

Authorities state the National Park Service requested assistance with a male running on foot in the North Maumee area. After deputies made contact with the victim, she stated her and Crutchfield had been floating the river earlier that day and after Crutchfield started drinking he allegedly became belligerent and started shouting obscenities at the woman stating it was her fault he was charged with a previous count of domestic battery.

The victim stated Crutchfield then allegedly took a towel and started hitting her in the face then pulling the back of her hair. A witness then asked the victim if she needed him to call 911 in which she responded yes. The victim stated she was able to get away from Crutchfield, walked across the river and through the woods until she found a home who allowed her to contact authorities. While speaking to the victim authorities witnessed Crutchfield’s vehicle drive by and head towards the North Maumee river access.

Later that day, dispatch advised of a 911 call of a man, identified as Crutchfield, stranded at the South Maumee side of the river. Upon arrival authorities observed a truck with a boat trailer sitting in the middle of the river. After Crutchfield was successfully apprehended, the truck and trailer were removed from the river, and his boat was located 200 yards down the river.

Cruchfield has been booked into the Searcy County Detention Center and ordered no contact with the victim.
