Three weather records were either broken or tied in January. One of those records resulted in one day being in the top 10 for snowiest days, and last month also ended up being in the top 10 among the snowiest Januarys.

At KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot, the official reporting station for the National Weather Service in Mountain Home, Jan. 25 was the only day of measurable snowfall last month, but it was a significant amount. The 9 inches of snow tripled the previous day’s record of 3 inches in 1978. The day also moved into a three-way tie for eighth among the snowiest days on record with March 17, 1970, and March 17, 1988. The two snowiest days were Feb. 16, 1993, and March 9, 1994, at 14 inches each.

That one day of snow also moved the previous month into a four-way tie for eighth among the snowiest Januarys. Nine inches were also recorded on Jan. 1970, 1987 and 1996. The month also ended up 7.1 inches above the average snowfall of 1.9 inches for January.

The meltdown from the snowfall also resulted in the record for precipitation on Jan. 25 being broken. The measurement in the gauge ended up at 1.53 inches. The previous record for the day was 1.41 inches in 2012. The total precipitation for January was 4.56 inches, which is 1.26 inches above the month’s average of 3.3 inches.

One other record was tied near the beginning of the year. The high temperature recorded on Jan. 3 was 73 degrees. The last time the temperature reached the mark on that date was in 2004. The average high for January was 51.1 degrees, and the average low was 30.8.
