
One area high school basketball team was making its first state championship game appearance since 1956, but their quest for the title came up short. The early part of the fourth quarter was back-and-forth, but Bigelow finished the game on a 14-0 run to defeat Marshall’s boys 59-44.
Marshall was led by Payton Depriest and Jesse Ragland with 12 points each, and Alessandro Govi chipped in 10. For the Panthers, Bennett Wilson was named the game’s most valuable player with 17 points, Javon Orr had 14 points and 14 rebounds, Wade Nutt scored 14 points, and Martell Macon added 10 points.
The Bobcats fall to 27-9 to end the season, and Bigelow improves to 31-2.
On the girls’ side, Mount Vernon-Enola scored the final 10 points of the game to claim the Class 2A title over Conway Christian by a score of 55-45. Dessie McCarty paced the Lady Warhawks with 36 points and 18 rebounds, and A.J. Person provided 11 points. For the Lady Eagles, Josie Williams finished with 26 points. Mount Vernon-Enola ends up at 38-5, and Conway Christian falls to 32-6.
