The Izard County Sheriff’s Office will participate in National Drug Take Back Day on April 22.

According to a release from the office, the event will be held in conjunction with the Izard County Health Fair at Ozarka College in Melbourne from 10 until 2. The permanent drop boxes at the sheriff’s office and sub-station may also be used for unused medications.

The sheriff’s office is located at 300 Circle Drive in Melbourne and the sub-station is located in the basement of the Horseshoe Bend City Hall at 704 Commerce Street in Horseshoe Bend.

The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing prescription drugs. Prescription drugs thrown in the trash can still be retrieved to be abused or illegally sold. The sheriff’s office states the drug overdose epidemic in the United States is considered a public health, safety and national security threat.

By participating in the event it is said to help prevent and reduce medication misuse and opioid addiction by properly disposing of any unneeded medications at home.
